Sonico was formed in 2002; a joint venture between Atkins, a leading independent multi-disciplined engineering consultancy, and Enpure Limited, an established process contracting business. Sonico was formed exclusively as a vehicle to market and exploit the sonix™ ultrasound technology for enhanced digestion which has been developed by Atkins since the early 1990s.

The key to the sonix™ technology is the novel design of the ultrasonics horn (the piece that that actually disperses the sound energy into the liquid). Shaped like a ring doughnut, this radial horn sits horizontally or vertically in the sludge pipeline, with the fluid running through and around it. Sonico has established a worldwide network of specialised licensees and sales representatives, as well as technical support from Branson Ultrasonics, to provide a full support package.
